St. Hugh church’s banner receives praise

When Annmarie Padula was asked to make a fabric banner to hang in the St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church in Idyllwild, she sewed from her heart.

Her labor of love turned out so well it has won numerous awards in various competitions. Most recently, the banner won first place at the 2007 California State Fair in the Creative Arts — Fiber Arts Division.

A couple of years ago, vicar Jerry Reynolds approached Padula’s friend, Nancy Borchers, to create a new banner for their church.

“Nancy is a very good artist,” said Padula. “She has a really good eye for design.”

Borchers designed the banner’s front, which includes a cathedral and the swan that St. Hugh, of Lincoln, England, kept as a pet. Borchers knew Padula was a quilt maker, so they collaborated on the 52-inch-by-30-inch double-sided fabric art.

“It was a joint effort,” said Reynolds, who has been at the church for five years.

Padula said a depiction of the cathedral St. Hugh built in Lincoln is tucked under the wing of the sewn swan.

“There is also a Star of David, which commemorates the time when he refused to allow the populace to persecute the Jews of Lincoln,” said Padula, of Idyllwild.

The background’s deep purple muted tones set off the swan’s white 3-D wing.

“The back side shows all the seals and emblems of the Idyllwild Church,” said Padula. These include the seal of the Diocese of San Diego, the emblem of the Episcopal Church of the United States, St. Hugh’s personal crest and the emblem of the local church.

The cross that separates the four designs comes from the pattern of floor stones in the Lincoln Cathedral in England.

The final work was machine sewn and appliquéd, but Padula and Borchers bonded the two sides together using tiny pearl beads.

Padula bested 11 entries in her class to take the blue ribbon at the 154-year-old state exposition that runs through Monday in Sacramento.

The judging criteria for fiber art projects includes workmanship, level of difficulty, design, technique appropriate for design, color and texture, and finishing or presentation.

The banner was awarded first place and best of show at the Southern California Fair in Perris and has received other first- and second-place ribbons since it was created in 2005.

When not entered in competitions, the banner hangs on a side wall of the church. It also is used in processions and many church functions in Idyllwild and elsewhere.

Padula began quilting in 1994 after taking a class in San Diego.

“I kind of got the bug,” she said. “It’s a nice hobby.”

The Snow Fire burning in the San Jacinto Mountains is holding at 100 acres and about 75 percent contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The blaze will likely not grow significantly before firefighters have it surrounded, Forest Service spokesman Jim Wilkins said.

“In this particular case, everything was in our favor,” he said.Aircraft was immediately available to create a line of retardant around the lightening-sparked fire and the wind blew against the fire, helping to prevent spread, Wilkins said. The Black Mountain and Boulder Basin campgrounds are still closed and officials are evaluating the Pacific Crest Trail to determine if it can be reopened for this weekend. There are no restrictions to any roads to Idyllwild.

Scorcher near Snow Creek

August 23rd, 2007

A wildfire in the tinder-dry wilderness of the San Jacinto Mountains was reportedly 90 percent contained Tuesday night after charring nearly 100 acres and destroying eight structures at an abandoned camp.

However, late Tuesday officials declined to release additional containment figures, saying only that the blaze would be allowed to burn through the night and crews would resume an air attack this morning.

The Snow fire began just before noon Tuesday, burning heavy brush and tinder northeast of the town of Pine Cove about 6,000 feet up the parched mountain side.

The cause remains under investigation, U.S. Forest Service officials said.
